BEWARE: Full Page Gold Newspaper Ads 3 Days Only!

Limited Time Events

BEWARE !
of the
Limited Time Events advertised with
Full Page Ads in the newspaper

Often, when gold prices have a dramatic price increase, you will see full page ads that promote a "Limited" time event.   These events are run by entities that come from out of town.

They run fancy full page ads to get your attention.    These events often promote that they are buying for a "limited" time to create sense of urgency.    This high pressured environment is not for your benefit, it is for their benefit.   You have to make a quick decision, which usually is a bad one.

You will also find that after announcing  something like "4 days Only" , that they run follow up ads that state "Held over an additional 4 days".  So much for the "limited" time and the sense of urgency.

Complaints by customers of Calaveras Coin & Pawn include accusations of these "out of state fly by night gold buyers"  is that they are "ripping people off" (not giving them fair market value) and "not filing out forms" (JUS123 as required by the Department of Justice) and turning them in locally to the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Department.  They are "not getting business licenses" (as required by Tuolumne County).  "They are taking the money out of the area along with the goods(not abiding by a 30 day hold policy as required by law) "taking the items either out of the county and sometimes even out of the state before victims of theft (in the Foothills and Mother Lode) would ever be able to identify their items" and some folks even believe even "immediately melting them down."
Unfortunately unscrupulous precious metal dealers setting up temporarily and not from the area paying grossly low prices for merchandise adversely effect the local economy and many times since they to not follow the law (many not requiring valid identification, signatures, photographs or fingerprints) and therefore are a perfect avenue for burglars to fence stolen goods.  Complaints from residence of Sonora have stated that these "gold buying events, have gone on twice just this month at the Aladdin Motor Inn and Best Western Sonora Oaks."

Calaveras Coin & Pawn is a family run, locally owned and operated business, serving the Mother Lode Community for over 25 years.   We have a vested interest in the community and in providing the very best for you.   You will not be rushed to make a decision.   You can take all the time you need, to make the best decision for you.

We work closely with law enforcement both on the federal, state and local levels.  We even provide victims of theft a free guide to help them recover their stolen items that many times show up in the hands of "those running hotel gold buying events."  If you should see one of these events taking place please either call the law enforcement in the jurisdiction of the event or call us at (209)736-COIN.  Together we can protect our community from illegal business activities, keep money local and help fight crime!

Numismatic Gold Coin, Bars or Bullion

Bullion Coins and Bars

Individuals can select from a broad array of gold bullion coins issued by governments around the globe. Examples are the Gold American Buffalo, the Gold American Eagle, the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf, the Austrian Philharmonic, the South African Krugerrand and several others.

The current market value of a bullion coin is determined by the value of its gold content, plus a premium that varies between coins, dealers and market conditions. These bullion coins are most commonly available in 1/20, 1/10, 1/4, 1/2 and 1 ounce sizes. One should be aware that the premium tends to be higher for smaller sizes.
Gold bars are also available in a wide assortment of weights and sizes, ranging from as small as one gram to 400 troy ounces (the size of the internationally traded London Good Delivery bar). For individuals looking to take physical delivery of their gold, the 400-ounce bars lack the convenience, portability and practicality of coins and smaller bars. Gold bars are manufactured by literally dozens of internationally recognized refiners around the world.

Rare Gold Coins: The Best Way to Own Gold

Rare gold coins are considered by many to be the best way to own gold because they offer many important advantages in addition to the intrinsic value of gold, here are the three most popular:
  1. Rare gold coins offer the advantage of increased profit potential over gold bullion coins and bars due to their quality and scarcity (numismatic/collectors value). Whereas literally millions of new gold bullion coins and bars are minted and manufactured each year, no one is making any new rare coins! The most common rare gold coins have surviving populations in the thousands, as opposed to the tens of millions of gold bullion coins which exist on the market.
  2. Rare gold coins also offer enhanced protection against government restrictions on private gold ownership. In 1933, the President put forth an executive order to confiscate privately owned gold and outlaw the private ownership of gold. However, the order specifically exempts numismatic rare coins from confiscation.
  3. Many who value their privacy also acquire US rare coins due to their status as a collectable that results in a completely private transaction.

Gold and Silver Storage - Where?

Buy a safe!  If this is your preference, do your homework on what kind of safe to buy and picking a secure place to install it. When it comes to storage a less preferable option that should only be used temporarily is a bank safety deposit box.  Just be sure to check your bank’s rating on a regular basis.  Two of the best places to check your bank are Bankrate.com (click here) and The Street.com.(Click here) If your bank’s rating starts to fall, you will probably want to move your precious metals.

You can also pawn your coins at a low loan amount in order to keep them locked in our safe for 4 months at a time with the ability to roll over the loan every fourth month.  Great way to keep things safe.

Value of The Dollar Today?

Question: What Is the Value of a Dollar Today?
Answer: The value of the dollar today is less than it was in the past. When the dollar loses value, that's called inflation. That's because prices seem inflated as each dollar is able to buy less and less.
How much lower is today's dollar value? Well, in 1913 you could buy as much with a dollar as you can with $23.19 in 2012, nearly 100 years later. By 1920, the dollar was worth only half, or $11.48 in today's value. Deflation (the opposite of inflation) duringthe Great Depression of 1929 increased the value of the dollar to $13.43. By 1940, the dollar was worth even more -- it could buy as much as $16.40 could today.
By 1950, the dollar's value had dropped even lower than before the Depression. It was worth only $9.53. It has fallen ever since:
  • 1960 = $7.76
  • 1970 = $5.92
  • 1980 = $2.79
  • 1990 = $1.76
  • 2000 = $1.33
  • 2010 - $1.05.
Is it any wonder that people are turning to gold and trusting local businesses for their gold purchases like Calaveras Coin & Pawn.  Family owned and locally run and operated for the past 25 years.  Located in downtown Angels Camp.

Transient Gold Buyers Forced To Shut Down!

Transient gold buyers forced to shut down

One of the largest transient gold buying operations in the country – THR & Associates – was forced to shut its doors late Thursday evening after Beaumont Police officers entered the temporary gold buying operation set-up at the Courtyard by Marriott near Washington Boulevard and informed them they were in violation of a number of state and local laws.

The Examiner has investigated THR and its affiliated companies for more than two-years and highlighted how the company operates by conducting undercover investigations in nine states.

Primarily, the company was in violation of a new law that went into effect on Jan. 1, 2012, requiring all buyers of precious metals to register with the state and obtain a license. Additionally, the companies must provide detailed receipts to the individuals from which they are buying, according to the law. The new law was originally pushed by the Pawn Dealers Association but also received input from several numismatic associations.

THR was also in violation of a city ordinance because none of the people buying precious metals at the Courtyard by Marriott were listed on a license application with the city of Beaumont. Both the state law and the city ordinance have criminal penalties calling for a Class B Misdemeanor that includes jail time and civil or administrative penalties or fines.

THR & Associates opened their most recent gold buying operation in Beaumont on Tuesday using the alias Mississippi Gold and Silver Refinery. The name is a spin-off of another alias – Ohio Valley Gold & Silver Refinery – and is part of a network of gold buying operations using nearly a dozen assumed names belonging to THR. The embattled company is also known as the Treasure Hunters Roadshow.
According to Sgt. Mike Mills, the manager for the Beaumont show had no clue about the state law. He said he explained to them that the company would not be allowed to operate until it was in compliance with all state and local requirements. The two employees were directed to the Beaumont Police Department in order to apply for the proper city licensing but they will also have to meet state requirements set-up by the Office of Consumer Credit Commissioner for Texas and the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Calaveras Coin & Pawn also supports similar laws in California that prohibit fly by night hotel room/banquet gold buyers to pay people pennies on the dollar.  The take gold out of the area, the money goes to a different state.  Illegal gold buyers are also not helping track down stolen goods.  If you see a gold buyer in a hotel call your local law enforcement and inquire as to whether they are turning in the proper forms to local law enforcement.

THE LAW:
California Business and Professions Code (B&P) §21626(a) defines a secondhand dealer as “any person whose business includes buying, selling, trading, taking in pawn, accepting for sale on consignment, accepting for auction or auctioning secondhand tangible personal property.” (this includes gold and silver found in items such as jewelry).
A "secondhand dealer" must be licensed(B&P Code 21640) (Not just a city/county business license but a "Department of Justice Second Hand Dealers License" - requiring a background check and fingerprinting.)

All transactions must be done at the location on the license. (B&P Code 21642.b.1)
All secondhand dealers shall report all transactions to the Chief of Police or Sheriff. (B&P Code 21628)
Every secondhand dealer shall hold for 30 days all tangible personal property acquired, and shall make it available for inspection by law enforcement. (B&P Code 21636)
Violation of any of the above is a misdemeanor with up to a $1,500 fine and/or 60 days in county jail. (B&P Code 21645).
If you are the host of, or otherwise allow at your location, a gold party that is not in full compliance with the laws that govern and regulate a "secondhand dealer" (requiring a Department of Justice License, you may be held liable in a crime. CA Penal Code §31. [“All persons concerned in the commission of a crime, whether it be felony or misdemeanor, and whether they directly commit the act constituting the offense, or aid and abet in its commission,...are principals in any crime so committed.”]
Also if the business transacts a certain amount in precious metals yearly a "Anti-Money Laundering Plan" (AML Plan) must also be on file with law enforcement and the hosting entity.

Come to the name that folks of the Foothills & Mother Lode have been coming to for nearly 25 years, Calaveras Coin & Pawn in Angels Camp.  Family owned and operated.  1283 S Main St. in historic downtown ANGELS CAMP (DOWNTOWN FROG TOWN).  (209)736-COIN

Gold or Silver Exchange Traded Funds (ETF)

What about gold or silver Exchange Traded Funds (ETF)?  Are ETF’s as good as physical gold or silver? ETF’s are not just as good as physical gold or silver.  There have been questions about how much precious metals they actually hold.  Nothing is as safe as holding the physical metal in your possession.  If you are going to buy gold and silver mining stocks, you must do your homework.  You must also constantly keep track of the mining company.  Again, nothing is as good as physical gold or silver.

How to Use Calaveras Coin & Pawn to Raise Some Money

  • 1
Test and clean the item. Looking around the garage and picking up something that hasn't been used for years and is covered in dust or grease will only make the pawnbroker's job more difficult. If it looks like you don't care about or value the item, the pawnbroker certainly won't place much value on it, either.

  • 2
Decide how much money you need to raise. By having a certain amount in mind, it helps the pawnbroker get you the amount you need. Saying to the pawnbroker, "I need to get as much as I can," is not very helpful. It is better to say, "I need $44.53 to cover my utility bill."
  • 3
Call the pawnbroker to be sure it is an item he is interested in taking. Some pawnbrokers no longer take guns, VHS tapes, VCRs or car stereos. Ask about the terms & conditions, and the contract period for holding the goods.
  • 4
Make sure the item is complete. TVs without remote controls, tool sets missing pieces, video cameras without cords and chargers are far less valuable than complete items.
  • 5
Have adequate ID. No reputable pawnbroker will accept an item without proper identification.
  • 6
Negotiate the price. The pawnbroker has to take in items cheaply so they can turn around and sell them at a bargain price and still make money. Sometimes the amount offered can be boosted a little, particularly if the item is easy to resell.

  • 7
Keep your pawn ticket. Some pawnbrokers charge a fee for lost tickets.
  • 8
Mark the due date on the calendar.
  • 9
Pick your item up well before the due date. Don't wait until the last minute to redeem items you cherish. Invariably, things happen at the last minute that may cause you to lose your items. Traffic, job responsibilities, illness, transportation problems, any unforeseen difficulty may cause you to be late. The pawnbroker has to sell items that are not redeemed on time.
  • What is Junk Silver & Why Buy It?

Then, there is “Junk” silver.  “Junk” silver is any U.S. dime, quarter or half-dollar minted on or before 1964.   1964 and earlier  dimes, quarters and half-dollars had 90% silver content.  “Junk” is sold by face value of the coin.

The most popular way to buy “Junk” silver is a 55 pound bag.  A 55 pound bag is $1,000 in face value of the coins, but that also equals 715 ounces of silver.  So, for example, a bag of dimes may have a face value of $1,000, but you pay the same as you would if you paid for 715 ounces of silver.  You always pay the spot price of silver plus a premium.  The advantage of buying “Junk” silver is you pay less premium per ounce than a 1 ounce silver coin, but you still have coins.
It is the cheapest way to buy quality silver coins officially minted by the government.
You can also buy “Junk” silver in much smaller increments.  Just remember that $1.50 in change equals about an ounce.  So, 15 dimes of “Junk” silver is an ounce and so on.  This way, you can always figure out how much you are paying per ounce when you buy “Junk” silver.  The most desirable “Junk” from best to least are half-dollars, quarters and dimes.  There are a few later years of coins after 1964 (mostly Kennedy half-dollars)  that had 40% silver, but those are extremely bulky and are the least desirable “Junk” silver coins.

Buying Silver - The Best & Simplest Advice

When it comes to silver, there are two main ways to buy it.  Once again, you can purchase bars or coins and, once again, coins win out.  I’ll give you the same reasons as discussed above when I talked about gold.  Bars do not carry the same prestige as coins, and you cannot break them up.  There are two types of bullion coins you can buy to accumulate silver–one ounce silver coins and “Junk” silver coins.  First, let’s talk about one ounce silver coins.   One ounce minted coins are made by several governments including the U.S.  Most governments do not mint fractional silver coins.  I do not recommend non-government minted coins, only officially government minted silver coins.

The 2 most popular and recognized silver 1 ounce coins in the world are the:
    • U.S. Silver Eagle
    • Canadian Silver Maple Leaf
There are other very high quality official government minted silver coins, but the Silver Eagle, Maple Leaf  are the 2 most popular and well known ones in the world.
