The Story That Started It All

In 1865 Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) visited the rough-and-tumble gold miners working the gold-rich foothills of Northern California in an old mining town of Angels Camp.  He allegedly heard a story in a tavern one night (the Angels Hotel now the site of Calaveras Coin & Pawn), then sat down and wrote "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County."  Whether the tale is true or not is still debated to this day.  What is sure is that his story captured the popular imagination of the day, and leapt into newsprint across the country and abroad.  It launched Twain's writing career and inspired the Jumping Frog Jubilee that still happens annually in Angels Camp, Calaveras County, California.

Frog Force Fed Lead Shot?

So what is happening in Angels Camp?  Frogs and what.... lead shot?  It is alleged to have happened 130+years ago according to Mark Twain.  It happened on Main St in Angels Camp right outside the Angels Hotel currently known as Calaveras Coin & Pawn.  Its documented as found below.

He ketched a frog one day, and took him home, and said he cal'klated to edercate him; and so he never done nothing for three months but set in his back yard and learn that frog to jump. And you bet you he did learn him, too.

How can we not care about a frog that jumps really high except when he is force-fed lead shot? But really, this tale proves to us the power of storytelling, and that just about anything can be fascinating, if it is told well (and with an accent).
